Higher-Order Uncertainty About Language∗

چکیده

It has been frequently noted that successful language use depends on the interlocutors’ higher-order beliefs. David Lewis [21], for example, informally introduces common knowledge as part of his account of language as a convention. We, instead, formally model and study the effects of higher-order uncertainty about language. We find that in common-interest communication games higher-order uncertainty about language, while potentially resulting in suboptimal language use at any finite knowledge order, by itself has negligible ex ante payoff consequences. In contrast, with imperfect incentive alignment, higher-order uncertainty about language may lead to complete communication failure for any finite-order knowledge of language. ∗We have benefitted from comments by James Fisher, Sidartha Gordon, Kohei Kawamura, Anton Kolotilin, Shih En Lu, Ariel Rubinstein, Joel Sobel, Jonathan Weinstein and from seminar audiences at Simon Fraser University, University of Arizona, Universität Bielefeld, University of British Columbia, University of Southern California and Tel Aviv University. We owe special thanks to Stephen Morris for having urged us to examine the connection of our conception of uncertainty about language with David Lewis’s work.

Determination of Resonance Frequency of Dominant and Higher Order Modes in Thin and Thick Circular Microstrip Patch Antennas with Superstrate by MWM (RESEARCH NOTE)

An accurate model named as the Modified Wolff Model (MWM) is presented as an efficient CAD tool for determination of resonant frequency of the dominant and higher order modes under the multi-layer condition in thin and thick circular microstrip patch antennas. The effects of dielectric cover on the resonant frequency obtained from MWM have been compared against the result of theoretical method ...

Common Knowledge of Language and Communication Success∗

When David Lewis [19] introduced common knowledge, he used it as a key ingredient in his account of language as a convention. We ask how essential higher orders of knowledge of language are for communication success. We find that in common-interest communication games higher-order failure of knowledge of language, while potentially resulting in suboptimal language use at any finite knowledge or...

Reasoning about actions under uncertainty: A possibilistic approach

In this paper, we present an action language which is called APoss in order to perform reasoning about actions under uncertainty. This language is based on a possibilistc logic programming semantics which is able to deal with reasoning under uncertain information. In order to illustrate the language, we use a medical scenario.

PR-OWL Decision: Toward Reusable Ontology Language for Decision Making under Uncertainty

Decision making is a big topic in Intelligence, Defense, and Security fields. However, very little work can be found in the literature about ontology languages that simultaneously support decision making under uncertainty, abstractions/generalizations with first-order expressiveness, and forward/backward compatibility with OWL—a standard language for ontologies. This work proposes PR-OWL Decisi...

Higher Order Uncertainty and Evidential Ontologies

The uncertainties implicit in intelligence gathering are not only about the state of the world, but also about the ways in which varying contexts should affect the degree to which a proposition is believed. We call this latter form of uncertainty higher order uncertainty, and argue that the introduction of a logical operator to K. Laskey’s MEBN specification can allow for learning about such un...
